New museum in Berlin dedicated to samurai art
The art of the old Japanese warrior elite, the samurai, can now be explored in a new museum in Berlin: the Samurai Art Museum. Located in one of the suburbs in the southwest of Berlin (Berlin-Zehlendorf), near the botanical gardens, this private museum houses the collection of Peter Janssen. Over a period of thirty years he built a large collection of Japanese arms and suits of armour and other works of art.
The Janssen collection is particularly strong in helmets and masks but also counts some 40 suits of armour and some 160 swords and objects used as swords’ decorations.
Having the wish to share his collection with a larger audience, Janssen opened his Samurai Art Museum in 2017. Being a small museum, its opening hours are limited: the museum can be visited on Wednesdays; Fridays and Sundays from 2-6pm.
